The following animals are all available for adoption. For more details on each animal and to apply for adoption scroll down below.
Please note to adopt one of our lovely hedgehogs or tenrecs there is an adoption donation of £80 for those under 6 months, £70 for those under 12 months old, £60 for those over 12 months and £40 for our Golden Oldies (4 years + APH only). For Long Eared hedgehogs the adoption donation is set at £100. This donation allows for the rescue to intake more hedgehogs and tenrecs in need and allow essential veterinary access to those who need it.

About: Maxwell is a two year old boy who was handed in beginning of September. He can be huffy to begin with , however once out of his shell, he is a cuddle monster who adores sleeping in jumper sleeves if given half the chance. He loves chicken and dreamies. He has a strange fetish of licking wood and loves to anoint.

Grod

Species: Lesser Tenrec
About: Grod has joined the Happy Quills team on 25/9/24. He is a five year old lesser tenrec and since tenrecs live up to ten years in captivity he has plenty of adventures still to be had. Grod adores his food, if he is ever missing just check by his bowl, he is sure to be near. He also loves a good sand bath and can whittle away his day making himself look dapper. Age: 1 year
Species: African Pygmy Hedgehog
About: Po joined Happy Quills on 28/9/24. He is a little on the chunky side, but that just gives him cuddle appeal. He likes to liner dive and seems to be very curious about everything. His birthday is 25/8/23. He is currently undergoing his first year quill, so is a bit huffy, but he will happily sit and get his back stroked and have the occasional tummy rub. He is a very nervous hog that would probably be more suited to a quieter environment.

Popeye
Location: Carlisle
Age: 2-3 years
Species: African Pygmy Hedgehog
About: Popeye came to Happy Quills 22nd September. He is a gorgeous Pinto boy who has obviously been eating too much spinach, as he is slightly on the chubby side. He has recovered from mites, which have caused his quills to be quite thin, but with pampering have stopped falling out and are slowly growing back. He also had a small cyst on the top of his head which was an ingrowing quill that has now emerged and the cyst has disappeared. Looking at the front of his head this is something that may reoccur as he has a few small curled quills, but is something easily fixed. He has a good appetite, but at the moment refuses to eat anything other than kibble and is an avid wheeler. He likes a good huff but is actually very sweet natured, no problem handling, he just is not a fan of stroking.

Twinkle

Species: African Pygmy Hedgehog
About: Twinkle joined Happy Quills 29/9/24. Like her name sake, Twinkle, is a very small but shining star. She was a teeny tiny 280g, she has put on 20g since joining us, but still needs to increase her weight. Not surprisingly, she has a crazy appetite. She does not like her wheel (older hogs can go off them) but whizzes around her viv doing laps instead (please note she is not displaying stressed behaviour) She will most likely end up as a permanent foster, but we will see how she does in her extended assessment period. She could surprise us all and be available to adopt as a Golden Oldie. She

- Toys, Forage Tray or Mat
- Bucket Wheel
- We recommend Carolina Storm, Tic Tac, Squazlehogs, or Speedyhogs
- Water Bowl, Kibble Bowl, and live food/fresh food bowl
LEH Requirements
Minimum Set up to Adopt or Foster:
- Vivarium 4ft x 2ft x 18, preferably larger vivarium
- Playpen or space for free roaming - Essential
- Ceramic Heat Emitter (CHE) Set Up, including:

- 100w Bulb
- Safety Cover
- Thermostat
- Digital Thermometer
- Substrate - e.g. finacard, paper based, aspen shavings and hemp bedding
- At least one bed/hide
- At least one tunnel
- Plenty of stimulating toys - e.g. treat dispensers, forage boxes, forage mats, etc.
- Bucket wheel 12" - 16", 12" minimum, ideally the biggest one you can fit in your enclosure
- Water Bowl, Kibble Bowl, and live food/fresh food bowl
Tenrec Requirements
Minimum Set Up to Adopt or Foster:
